Fans vote unanimously for Kepa Arrizabalaga to replace David de Gea as Spanish number one

The fight to be the Spanish number one had been a one horse race for many years.

The former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas held the position for 15 years much to the dismay of other top Spanish stoppers who would've walked into many national teams - Santiago Canizares, Pepe Reina and Victor Valdes just to name a few.

Now that Casillas is apporaching his 38th birthday and has been out of the international picture on a permanent basis for a few years, it has given new blood a chance to emerge.

The first to take the mantle was Manchester United's number one David de Gea.

The 28-year-old has been outstanding for the Red Devils since singing from Atletico Madrid back in 2011, winning the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year no less than four times.

Despite struggling for caps early on, De Gea now has 39 caps to his name, but had a torrid time at the World Cup and has suffered with indifferent form this campaign as United are set to finish in a Europa League spot.

Another Spanish Premier League 'keeper who is competing for that coveted spot, is Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The 24-year-old - who has often been compared to a young De Gea - made the headlines for the wrong reasons earlier this season when he refused to be substitued in the EFL Cup final by manager Maurizio Sarri.

Kepa had dived to make a save, before clutching his leg with what looked like cramp, however despite Sarri wanting to replace him with back up goalie Willy Caballero for the up and coming penalty shootout, the youngster simply gestured that he was fine and ignored his manager's orders.

That is all water under the bridge now, and Kepa has been in good form as we approach the end of the season.

The former Bilbao man saved two penalties as Chelsea scraped past Eintracht Frankfurt to reach the Europa League final.

Whilst, De Gea has made three mistakes leading to goals in his last five games, compared to three mistakes in 123 games prior to that.

This has clearly been a factor in the voting from fans as to who should be the Spanish number one at this present moment.

AS released a poll to see who out of Kepa and De Gea should be between the sticks for Spain according to the public.

The result was unanimous:

Despite De Gea's poor form, such a one-sided result will surprise some people, however it seems as though if the fans were in charge of the Spanish national team, Kepa would soon be increasing his caps tally from the four he has at the moment.
