Over the course of time, football fans have been treated to some truly world-class defenders.
The golden days of AC Milan alone gave us Alessandro Nesta and Paolo Maldini. Manchester United gave us Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. Real Madrid have given us Sergio Ramos and Fernando Hierro.
Too many times when people discuss legendary figures, they completely ignore defenders and they solely focus on the attackers and the players who usually steal the headlines.
Well, in a recent poll on the Allfootballonline Facebook page, we wanted to give the attention to the centre-backs, two of the very best centre-backs to play the game that is.
We asked our fans who they would rather have in the heart of their defence; Carles Puyol or Fabio Cannavaro.
Two absolute icons of the game and two living legends with their respective club and country, but there could only be one winner.
After 24 hours of voting, and with over 58,000 people having their say, we can now confirm that the winner of said poll is none other than... Carles Puyol!
The Spanish international, who was an absolute rock at the back for both Spain and FC Barcelona, strolled home with 60% of the votes, which may seem pretty harsh on the Italian wall that is Cannavaro.
Of course, both players are absolute icons of the game and both of them comfortably sit in the world-class category, but when fans could only choose one winner, they backed Puyol.
Where do you start when discussing his career?
Well, with Barcelona alone he won a remarkable 18 trophies. That tally of 18 includes three Champions League wins and six La Liga successes too.
But it's not just Barca where he tasted success, he was also a key part in Spain's global dominance.
In 2008, he was part of the European Championship side that sealed Spain's first ever international trophy, and then just two years later, they added to it as World Cup winners in South Africa.
Maybe 60% in favour of Puyol is harsh, because Cannavaro was one of the best on his days, but the fans have spoken.
